The titanium advantage
Is titanium the material of the future for exhausts? It would appear to be the case that with the ever increasing noise restrictions placed on the operation of all vehicles both on and off road coupled with the desire to reduce mass is leading more engineers to consider titanium. Motorsport has often been the proving ground for new technologies, and BTB has seen an increased demand for titanium. The advantage centres on its low density, which allows larger and more rigid structures to be used without compromising weight. It also is much more dimensionally stable than stainless steel when exposed to heat, enabling tighter packaging constraints to be used. The main disadvantage is cost, but with demand rising and manufacturing techniques improving this could come down, allowing more users the joy of adding lightness to their vehicle.
