BTB's Sporting Success

With the summer a distant memory and the winter build season almost here, November is a good time to reflect on some of the sporting success that BTB has contributed to in 2012. The highest profile domestic championship in the UK is the terrestrially televised British Touring Car Championship. BTB were very pleased to be approached at January’s Autosport International show by Triple Eight Race Engineering regarding a then unnamed new car project. With the build schedule compressed into a heroically short time frame, they still managed to turn out two new MGs for the first round of the championship. BTB’s just in time exhaust delivery was considerably aided by the fact that Triple Eight are based very close to BTB’s Northamptonshire base. Despite it’s short gestation the new MG, in Jason Plato’s hands, was in the hunt for the championship until the final round, which was a tremendous effort by all the team.

Even greater success in 2012 came the way of a customer who BTB had almost forgotten about. Trevor Willis has been campaigning a Powertec V8 engined OMS on the hills since BTB made his exhaust in 2006. The exhaust manifolds were designed in association with SBD Motorsport, who supply and map the electronics for Trevor’s car, and were based on their experience with the Suzuki Hayabusa engine, from which the V8 is derived. The same exhausts were carried over onto his latest car along with an upgraded engine. Coupled with Trevor’s massively committed driving style, the combination has been in devastating form this year, culminating in Trevor winning the prestigious 2012 MSA British Hillclimb championship. When asked whether the BTB exhausts were still fitted to his championship winning car Trevor replied “Many people have commented on the exhaust over the years and I am always happy to recommend BTB to them.”

November is just the time for fireworks, and whilst you look at this picture from a customer’s test bed, just imagine the sound and spectacle that this 785bhp V12 makes at 8100rpm. Whist the acronym for what is happening here is WOT (Wide Open Throttle), that may also be the first utterance from the lucky driver strapped in front of this engine when he opens the throttles wide. BTB’s masterpiece of exhaust pipe work for the V12 dyno engine was created only from photographs and sketches, which were refined into a CAD proposal before fabrication commenced. The pipes are designed to allow for further tuning of the engine including another increase in capacity to nearly eight litres!
